Vampress Luxura Sketch Card Set

Interior package art for the card set by Kirk Lindo & Clive Jones

In October of last year (2010) I got an email from Nathan Ohlendorf of THE SKETCH CARD STUDIO asking me to grant him a license to produce a Vampress Luxura Sketch Card Set. At the time I had no idea what a Sketch Card Set was. Nathan and I got on the phone and had a great conversation about  what Sketch Cards are and the market for them. I was skeptical at first but from talking to Nathan, I could tell that this guy was passionate about art, comics and most of all Sketch Cards.

The last Vampress Luxura card set was the Chromium Set which anyone who has ever seen knows that it is absolutely beautiful! I would rather not do a Luxura card set at all than do one that is not something that I or Luxura fans would really like. Since I am working on the new graphic novel I figured that a new Luxura Card Set would be a great way to introduce her to new readers as well as give existing fans something VERY cool to collect.

The card set was released in April (2011) and the sales have been EXCELLENT! I have to give most of the credit to Nathan! he did a fantastic job of choosing some very talented artists and making sure that the project was first class all the way.

If you haven’t gotten one of the sketch cards yet then you really should. I know it sounds like a sales pitch but these cards are REALLY cool. When Nathan sent me a batch of samples I laid them all out and was looking at them for at least an hour. It was just amazing the amount of detail that some of the artists put into the illustrations. In many cases, you can hardly call these “sketches”.

Here is some info from the official release:

Script for the Graphic Novel finally FINISHED!!!

The production script mock up is a complete page and panel breakdown of the entire story.

The Graphic Novel is WRITTEN!

A few weeks ago I achieved a personal milestone in the creation of the Vampress Luxura: Sword of the Apocalypse graphic novel.

I can officially report that the entire script is now completed!

From the very beginning I told myself that I would not start on the art until the entire story was fully written. I can’t begin to explain how good it feels to accomplish this feat. And trust me, it was a feat! The entire story breaks down into 20 chapters. Just like a regular novel, some chapters are longer than others. I would have to say that the story reads more like 20 episodes of a TV series more so than a 2 hour movie.

The final graphic novel tops out at around 660 pages! WOW!!! That’s a little over 200 pages more than I originally planned. Most of that is due to the fact that the story has fewer panels than the typical comic. Even so, it will be a VERY thick book when completed. It also took me much longer to write than I expected. From the time my son (Kirk II) and I started hashing out the storyline to the finished manuscript took me 19 months. That was in-between family life, work and sleep.

The hard bound mock up of the graphic novel is much easier to carry around than 660 pieces of loose paper.

I would get up very early in the morning when everything is quiet around the house and write for about an hour a day. Every now and again I would get extended periods where I could write for about 3 or 4 hours at a time, but for the most part the writing was done in those very quiet morning hours. There were a few weeks where life just got too hectic to make any progress at all and those times really bummed me out. It didn’t stop me though, eventually things would calm down and I could get back into a rhythm of writing. I must say that the next time I hear about a writer who took two or three years to finish a novel, I will know why.

Now that the story is complete, I am moving on to the thumbnails. For those of you who are not familiar with that term. Thumbnails are little rough sketches of what will be in each panel and on each page. The movie industry calls them Story Boards. I already had several pages of thumbnails created but they don’t fit with the page design of the book so I will have to do them all over. Once I have completed the roughs for the first issue, I will begin working on the final art and then the graphic novel will REALLY begin!

The completed book will be a VERY thick! I have a LOT of drawing to do but I am really looking forward to it!

When I finished the script the next thing I did was to actually create a panel by panel mock up of the entire graphic novel. I did this because I wanted to find out exactly how many art pages it would end up being. I took the script line by line and broke it down into what each character was saying and doing in each panel. That’s how I found out to a very close approximation, how many pages I would have to draw.

I took the panel mock up and printed it out so I can make script and art notes right on the pages. Once I did the printout I ended up with a stack of paper that was about 4 inches thick. This presented a few problems. First of all, I had no way to bind all of that together, second, it was way to big to carry around with me to work on. I then thought that if I used one of the Print On Demand companies that I print some of my books with, then I could make a hard bound printed version of the Panel Mock Up and I would be able to carry it around with me where ever I go. This worked out perfectly!

With this crucial part of the process in hand I can now begin to make significant progress in creating the rest of the graphic novel. Please take a moment to look at my connection icons in the top right area of this web page and choose the method you like best to be notified when I make updates to this site.

Until then, please remember…

I use the mock up to write notes, make sketches and get a general feel of how the story flows.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Free Comic Book Day 2010!

by Kirk Lindo on June 13, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Free Comic Book Day was a smashing success! This was my first store appearance in several years and the very first FCBD that I’ve ever done. I thought it only fitting that it be at my good friend Bernie’s store, The Dragons Lair. Anyone who remembers knows that May 1st, 2010 was a gorgeous day and perfect for FCBD.

The guys in the photo above is Dragon’s Lair owner Bernie and his business partner, Jan.

A few photos of some of the people who showed their support by purchasing signed copies of the SWORD OF THE APOCALYPSE INTRODUCTION BOOK.

FCBD at Dragon’s Lair is a HUGE event! Vendors, Face Painting, Radio coverage and all sorts of cool stuff!

To make the event more for FCBD. We set up an Xbox tournament where you could play as one of the characters from the graphic novel. We used the IT BEGINS FCBD TRAILER to promote it. We had 8 contestants who randomly picked a character to compete as. One of the local GAME STOP stores gave me a $50.00 gift certificate for the winner. Pictured is the winner and a few of the participants.

We made a SWORD OF THE APOCALYPSE signature poster for fans, friends and customers to sign for us. I thought it was a cool way to remember the event. Every time we do a store or convention appearance I’ll be bringing one of these for people at the event to sign, and when it’s over I’ll hang it somewhere in my studio.

FCBD 2010 was a great success! I saw some old fans and friends and made some new ones. The atmosphere was perfect and turned out to be the best way to launch the SOTA project!

This “Introduction Book” sets the stage for the upcoming Graphic Novel by bringing new readers and old alike into the mind of the Kirk Lindo as he embarks on this monumental 300 plus page project. This novel will mark the long awaited return of Kirk Lindo’s most famous fictional character in a story that promises to be an epic vampire adventure!

“Anyone who is familiar with my work will gather just from reading the Introduction Book that this is not… “just another vampire story” It’s the culmination of a life’s work and far exceeds any project I have ever done before. If you are not familiar with my work then the “It Begins” Introduction Book is a perfect place to start. It takes you through over 15 years of my life and career and how it brought me to the point of embarking on this project.

It Begins!

And I invite you to join me!”
